Information on the process of applying for compensation for disadvantage

Who can apply?
All students who are unable to complete an assessment or examination in the prescribed form due to a health impairment or disability are entitled to compensation for disadvantage. To be granted this they need a (specialist) medical or psychological / psychotherapeutic certificate confirming a longer-lasting or permanent illness or disability, which partially or fully impedes the student’s ability to complete assessments or examinations.

How do I apply for compensation for disadvantage?
To apply, complete the “Application for Compensation for Disadvantage” form. Details of the health impairments and their specific impacts on the student’s ability to participate in the course and examinations must be given in the form. In addition, measures may be applied for / proposed, which may be necessary from a technical point of view. A (specialist) medical certificate or a psychological report must be attached to the application. The application should be sent to the Chair of the Board of Examiners.

The Board of Examiners in collaboration with the Examination Office and the lecturers responsible will consider the application and notify the applicant accordingly. Subsequently, the head of course must contact the student immediately to discuss the implementation of the measures specified.

When do I have to submit the application?

The application must be submitted to the Board of Examiners by no later than the end of the examination registration period.

More information
The aim of providing compensation for disadvantage is to ensure equality of opportunity between students with and without impairments. As the effects of limitations are individual, the necessary measures are established on an individual basis. A separate application must be made for each language and each part of an examination.

Should the impairments also affect a student’s participation in language lessons, they should contact the Board of Examiners directly after registering for the course.

Should you require compensation for disadvantage on the basis of pregnancy, parental or caring responsibilities, please use the information services of the Office for Equal Opportunities and Families:
